- On June 9, 2012, a Congressional Gold Medal event to honor the WWII veterans who served in the Nisei units of the 100th Battalion, 442nd RCT and the MIS (Military Intelligence Service - including post-war Japan) will be held in Little Tokyo, downtown LA. The units received this honor in November of 2011. If you know of any who are in this category, especially those who were unable to attend the CGM event in Washington, DC last fall, please pass this information along to them. Even those who did receive their replica medal may participate in this event. (Note: Invitations were sent out to hundreds of vets in the LA area recently, so you may know some who already received their invite). In addition to the invitation, I would like to ask your support in helping us to fund this event by participating in the family advertisements, business ads or sponsorship program. This event is co-sponsored by many community organizations, including veteran groups, in the L.A. area. FYI, the area not only includes L.A. County, but O.C. and Ventura county as well. If you would like to participate, please email the application back to me, or at least include my name in your application form so that I can personally respond to you and thank you for your help! Sincerely, Tim Yuge, L.A. CGM Event Volunteer
- Help Us Preserve the History of Judo in the United States. Hello Everyone, USJA and USJF have recently formed a joint Archivist Committee. Our goal is to perverse judo history in the US. Our current inventory is 145,000 pages of judo historical documents, but there are many things that are missing. These ranges from bracket sheets, newspaper articles, programs from various tournament and various judo publications. Do you have judo programs, newspaper articles, bracket sheets and everything in between lying around the house or garage? Has someone in your family been after you to get rid of these papers? If so, why not consider contacting the Archivist Committee to see if your items are in their inventory? If the items are not in their inventory, the committee will scan and if necessary return the documents to you. The committee points of contacts are: Constance H. Halporn (americanjudomag@gmail.com ) and Jerry R. Hays (jrhays@cox.net). (Posted Dec 8, 2011)

Editorials and Letter to Nanka:
- Dear Nanka, Ever since I could remember I have been apart of this great organization. Through the good and bad times the best out of Nanka has always shined through. At the second senior practice held at San Fernando Judo one of my senior students had left his sweatshirt, which held his wallet inside. Luckily I was able to get a hold of my longtime friend Ritchie Endow who would bring the wallet with him to San Jose the following weekend. During the pre-registrations for the D-level competition my student Fernando had forgotten his card in his wallet. I was lucky to have Ritchie’s number only to find that he had gone to drive over two hours to retrieve Fernando’s wallet so that he may register in time for the D-level competition in the morning. To go above and beyond for my student was an act that truly touched my heart. I would like to take this moment to say thank you Ritchie on behalf of my student, Central Coast Judo and myself in you taking the time for Fernando who is young in his Judo but was able to see what a lifetime commitment to Judo means both on and off the mat! Humbly, Greg Rubio - Central Coast Judo Joan Shiosaki, Nanka Office (Posted Feb 1, 2012)
- Editorial - "What the Hell is a Black Belt Rank" - Hayward Nishioka I once asked a high ranking friend of mine, “What is a Shodan?” How does one know if one is a first degree black belt, or a second, or a third for that matter? Is it that a person can beat a certain number of other practitioners? If so, how many, and of what quality? He couldn’t answer the question with any degree of conviction. He just said, “I know he doesn’t look like a white belt or even a sankyu. (third degree brown belt) I asked this question because I was at one time a member of four American promotion committees on or about the same time, and each one of them had different criteria’s for shodan. Even within the same organization’s criteria’s, weird differences arose. I also noticed that internationally many of our U.S. brown belt’s would easily beat Japanese shodan’s. But, that’s where it usually stopped. Once they got to nidan and sandan it was a different story. There seemed to be more Picasso art than Newtonian science to how judoka got promoted, and I was somewhat confused, as I am sadly even to this day (To Read More) (Posted Jan 11, 2012)
